When I created The Ann Hewan Foundation, I always knew that my community was in need of deep change and restoration. I was born and raised in Goodwill District, I know the town like the back of my hand. I went to Goodwill All Age and Infant School and I spent the majority of my childhood exploring and meeting new people everyday. My mother migrated to the United States back in 1971. She could not afford to take me with her, so my aunt, the selfless woman she was, took me in as her own son. She knew everyone, I mean, everyone in Goodwill. She knew their needs and she made sure even if it was small or large, she did something to help. I grew up watching her nurture her community, making connections that surpassed her lifetime. Living with Aunt Ann shaped me into who I am today. Where Aunt Ann was, I was, we had a special bond that I carry with me. To all the people who knew me in the Goodwill Community and surrounding communities, they knew Aunt Ann as Eddie “Pete” Peters’ grandmother, not just his Aunt. Even though I eventually migrated to US after attending Cornwall College, I knew I could not live this life knowing that my community back home needs me. I made a promise to myself in honor of Aunt Ann, that no matter where I end up in life I will always continue to support my community.
When I settled in America the portion of my name “Eddie” was dropped and I am now known as Pete Peters. However, I know I am home when I hear Eddie, it will always tie me to the place I love and the people I love. My recent travels to Jamaica and Goodwill reiterated that for me. From then on it solidified this is the time in my life to truly follow in Aunt Ann’s footsteps and nurture the community that raised me. I founded The Ann Hewan Foundation because it is time for bigger change, it is time to give the people of Goodwill true hope and a new pillar to lean on in tough times. I hope that my son and my niece will learn from me, as I did from Aunt Ann, and become true pillars for our community. The light that Aunt Ann was, will forever burn, I will never let that light go out. I will pass the burner to the future generations in hopes that they too will continue to take care of where they come from.
"The Ann Hewan Foundation"
"I always struggled with the idea that my family felt that it was better to migrate out of Jamaica in search of better opportunities, because there weren’t any back home. When my uncle spoke to me about his plans for a nonprofit that will help our community, I felt a joy that was bigger than me. It felt as if all of my ancestors felt true peace. My dream has always been to make Jamaica a place where people don’t dream of leaving, but a place where people are happy to stay. I want to create opportunities and hope for all communities in Jamaica, expanding the idea of hope and financial freedom. I know there is a literacy epidemic, so taking care of schools and providing jobs is my first priority. It will take a true army to make Jamaica a true dreamland, and I see it coming together day by day. I believe that The Ann Hewan Foundation will restore communities as well as bring a new outlook to life to those currently struggling on the island. Instead of giving my people a ticket out; I dream of shaping Jamaica to be the land of opportunities that it was intended to be.
Aunt Ann was a huge pillar in the Goodwill Community, giving people hope and peace. I see the needs and the demands she saw, that my uncle sees. We know there is so much work to be done. My grandmother taught our family, that many hands make light work. So I vow to make the load lighter in anyway that I can. I am so grateful to see the needs and not be blind to it. I want the future generations to find joy and opportunities without feeling the need to leave Jamaica.
- Aunt Ann gave us the blueprint and we are working on the foundation. -
The connections and the change we will make will surely last more than our lifetimes."
